About Lewisham
The town of Lewisham has a long and rich history dating back to the Saxon times. It is believed that the name ‘Lewisham’ derives from the Old English ‘lēohþ’ meaning ‘meadow’ or ‘hill’, and ‘hām’ meaning ‘homestead’ or ‘village’.
In the Domesday Book of 1086, Lewisham was recorded as ‘Levesham’ and was held by the Bishop of Bayeux from Odo of Bayeux. The manor was later passed to the Earl of Leicester, and then to the Crown during the reign of Edward VI.
During the 17th century, the area became known for its market gardens, which supplied London with fruit and vegetables. The arrival of the railways in the 19th century led to a growth in population and industry, and the town expanded rapidly.
Today, Lewisham is a vibrant and diverse town, with a strong sense of community. It is home to a number of landmark buildings and features, including Lewisham Clock Tower, Mountsfield Park and Ladywell Fields.
